This is my 21st year of teaching at Viking.  This is my 25th year of teaching.  A long time ago, I was a student at Viking.  I am the Athletic Director, Assistant Softball and Assistant Wrestling Coach.

  •  Welcome to 8th Grade Science. We are currently in the Chemistry Unit.  The students have been studying the parts of the atom.  We are currently looking at the Electron Shells and Electron Dot Diagram.

  • Here is what we will be covering in 8th Grade Science:
     
    The first Unit is a review of the skills that the students have been working on since their 6th grade year at Viking.  We will start the year with Chemistry.  This Unit is the overarching theme for the rest of the Units.  As we explore the units, we will constantly be referring back to how chemistry is involved in all the different aspects of the world around us.
     
    Process Skills - Scientific Method, Metirc System, and Graphing
     
    Chemistry - Stucutre of Matter, Periodic Table, Chemical Formulas, Balancing Chemical Equations and Types of Atomic Bonding
    Applied Chemistry - Organic Compounds, Fossil Fuels, and Alternative Energy
     
    Cell Processes - Cell Theory, Osmosis & Diffusion, Photosynthesis, Respiration, and Fermentation
    Taxonomy and Kingdoms - Definition of Life, Classification System, Taxonomy, Dichotomous Keys, Prokaryote Domains, Kingdom Fungi, and Kingdom Protist
     
    Cold-blooded vertebrates - Fish, Amphibians and Reptiles
    Warm-blooded vertebrates - Birds and Mammals
    Mammalian Brain - Different Lobes of the Brain - location and function, Parts of a Neuron - Location and Function
     
    Weather - The Layers of the Atmoshphere, Air Pressure, Types of Fronts, Types of Clouds, and Severe Weather
